The wolf-like canids, which include the genera Canis, Cuon, Lupulella, and Lycaon, are genetically closely related, all possessing 78 chromosomes arranged in 39 pairs. Members of Canis can potentially interbreed, but it is believed that Cuon, Lupulella, and Lycaon cannot breed with each other or with Canis.
