Canis is a genus within the subfamily Caninae that includes several extant species such as wolves, dogs, coyotes, and golden jackals. Species of this genus are characterized by moderate to large size, massive well-developed skulls and dentition, long legs, and comparatively short ears and tails. The genus was published by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the 10th edition of Systema Naturae and has been the subject of extensive taxonomic and evolutionary study.
